Joseph Turner

Medical Student @ NYU Grossman '28

Hi, I'm Joseph Turner. I'm an incoming medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City.

I'm interested in neuroimaging, computer science, and brain stimulation—exploring how these tools can help us understand and treat neurological conditions like movement disorders and epilepsy.

More broadly, I'm fascinated by the mechanics of the brain and intelligence itself—how they emerge, adapt, and can be influenced.

MD student at NYU Grossman. NYU has been a dream of mine ever since they introduced full-tuition scholarships for all MD students. The three-year curriculum, world-class hospitals, and incredible group of peers made this an easy choice.

2024 - 2025
Harvard Medical School
Research Assistant at the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics, Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School. I worked with Frederic Schaper on epilepsy and deep brain stimulation research, diving into neuroimaging and transcriptomic data to uncover how brain circuits shape neurological conditions. Mentored by Mike Fox and Michael Ferguson, I helped build and manage the lab's computational infrastructure and improved our analysis pipelines.

2023
BYU
BS in Neuroscience at BYU on a full-tuition merit scholarship. I worked with Jared Nielsen on computational neurology research, developing LesionBank.org—an online database linking brain lesions to functional connectivity. I even built an ML app to classify neurologic symptoms in stroke patients, which took me to the final stage of BYU's Student Innovator of the Year competition (and netted me $4,000). After missing a key scholarship renewal deadline, I speedran my degree to graduate in only four semesters, all while squeezing in an internship at Harvard working on machine learning applications for anesthesia.

2020 - 2022
Latter-day-saint (Mormon) missionary in northeast Brazil. I spent most of my time in small deserty towns like Pau dos Ferros, Patos, and Mossoró, and then another year in Natal on the coast. Best moment: Brazilians telling me I was surprisingly good at soccer for an American. Worst moment: Getting escorted at gunpoint through the favela by drug dealers.

ACC
AS at Austin Community College with a major in Chemistry, where I graduated at age 17.
